EAACI Allergy School
Research Methods
3 – 5 April 2014
Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom.
This Allergy School will enable the audience to develop the skills necessary to locate and critically appraise existing research findings, to learn how to effectively retrieve and manage information and how to assess the quality of published material.
Furthermore the programme looks at how to design and manage data collection, critique methods of sampling, justify the selection of specific methods to address research questions, and understand sources of bias and threats to rigour in data.
Specific methodologies will be explained, such as theoretical, technical and pragmatic issues associated with randomised and non-randomised experimental designs (and variations thereof in clinical research) as well as matched-subjects designs and repeated measures designs.
In a computer practical the use of SPSS and data analysis will be taught.
The participant will learn about: levels of measurement; parametric and non-parametric statistical procedures; descriptive and inferential statistics; correlation, association, and causality; comparing means; statistical approaches to multivariate data analysis; familiarisation with and use of SPSS.
Finally the goal is to confidently prepare, deliver and defend research presentations.
The course will predominantly include lectures and workshops with computer based practical sessions.
